We always start the year with good intentions. We’re going to go to the gym five times a week. We’re going to make a budget and stick to it. We’re going to read one book a week, etc. But how often do we fulfill our goals? Hardly ever. But, I feel like 2017 is your year. You can do this and we’re going to help!

So how do you choose a resolution and stick to it?

When deciding on a resolution, make a plan. If you went to the gym six times in 2016, it’s unreasonable to expect that you’ll start going six times a week in 2017. You’re setting yourself up to fail. Instead, start small. Step 1: get a gym membership. Step 2: go to the gym once or twice a week. Step 3: develop a routine. Step 4: try a new fitness class. Step 5: workout with a personal trainer. Once you meet a goal, make a new goal. That way, your resolution is constantly changing with you.

Have a support system

Meeting your goals isn’t always easy. Some days you’ll hate it. Some days, you’ll love it. Having a friend there to help you along the way will make your journey easier. They’ll pick you up when you fall. They’ll send you inspirational texts and they’ll make you get out of bed instead of binge-watching Netflix. If your goal is fitness related, why not refer a friend to the Y and save 20% on your memberships?

Be realistic

Setting goals outside of your ability is setting yourself up to fail. Saying that you’re going to go to the gym every day is unreasonable. Saying that you’re going to try three new classes is doable. Think about what you can accomplish this year.

While it’s great to have long-term goals, you’ll feel like you’re getting closer to your big goal if you set a bunch of smaller goals. If you’re waiting until December 31 to see results, you’ll be less likely to act on it now. Set smaller monthly goals until you reach your long-term goals.

If your New Year’s resolution is fitness related, now is a great time to join the Y. From now until January 15th, we are waiving the joiner’s fee. As a bonus, if you join with a friend or refer a friend, you’ll both save 20% on your membership!
