Every summer, low-income youth lose two to three months of reading comprehension while their higher-income peers make slight gains.
This summer, The Capital District YMCA’s Literacy Enrichment Achievement Program (LEAP) is engaging over 100 children in the Albany City School District to stop this Summer Slide.
LEAP utilizes certified teachers to integrate four language arts areas into reading instruction: guided reading, self-selected reading, writing and working with words.
Previous YMCA Summer Programs have shown reading improvements from 3 months to 1 year.
The program is FREE to families that to support from our lead donor, MVP Health Care, and our partners Pioneer Bank and Sunmark Federal Credit Union.
