Update January 26, 2010
Capital District YMCA President and CEO David Brown met with members of a task force formed by members of the Washington Ave branch and concerned citizens from the Albany neighborhood, to talk about what can be done to help increase membership.
At that meeting, Dave Brown offered a number of action items, to be completed by the YMCA, to help efforts to bring new members to the Washington Ave branch.
These items are all in addition to actions the Capital District YMCA has already taken to help increase membership in the Washington Ave branch, which include lowering the price of membership and waiving the joiner’s fee ($100 value) for two months, from January 1 – February 28, 2010.
Additional action items:
New Member Postcard Mailing
10,000 postcards were printed, with 8776 of them being mailed to residents in the Washington Ave neighborhood, announcing new lower pricing for membership and the fact that the joiner’s fee has been waived through February of 2010. In addition 1,000+ copies of the postcard were delivered to the Washington Ave branch, to be distributed throughout the community by staff and volunteers.
New Member Advertisements
A 2 x 6 ad will appear in the Albany Times Union Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Sunday (1.27, 1.28, 1.29, and 1.31) promoting the new lower pricing for membership, and that the joiner’s fee has been waived through February 28.
Washington Ave Member Letter
A letter was issued to all current members of the Washington Ave branch, explaining the situation and asking for their help. Members have been asked to help in three specific ways:
- Bring a new member to Washington Ave. To help encourage members to bring in new members, each current member who brings in a new member will receive a free month of membership.
- Sponsor an Albany youth at the Washington Ave branch. Specifically, members have been asked to donate the funds needed to offer YMCA membership to an Albany youth.
- Volunteer to help bring more members to the Washington Ave branch.
College Student Special Pricing Postcard
An electronic postcard was created, in the same style as the new member postcard, promoting a new special lower rate for college students who join Washington Ave. That rate is just $20 per month. The postcard is being issued to college student relations contacts at area colleges, with the request that the postcard be forwarded to their students.
New Member Campaign Phon-a-thon Script
A script was created for a planned phon-a-thon, explaining the situation at the Washington Ave branch, and asking for help. This script will be used when contacting current Washington Ave members.

Joiner Fees
A $100 joiner fee is required for all Family, One-Adult Family and Adult memberships and $25 for youth* memberships (*18 years old and under). When re-joining, joiner fee is required on all memberships, lapsed for more than 60 days.
Your membership dues can be paid in one of two ways:
Monthly: Automatic draft from checking or saving account, debit or credit card
Annual: Cash, Check, or credit/debit card
Under the automatic draft monthly payment plan, you pay an initial joiner's fee, where applicable. You then authorize the YMCA and your bank to automatically withdraw monthly dues from your checking or savings account, debit or credit card. Monthly dues continue as long as you are a member. Membership cards must be turned in to the membership office upon cancellation.
You can discontinue your monthly draft by giving the YMCA 30-days notice in writing, and returning all membership cards.
Membership dues are subject to change with 30-day notice to members.
