Boxing is an exercise trend that’s on the rise. Celebrities are doing it. Your friends are doing it. Why don’t you try it too? Maybe you think it’s too violent, or that it’s an exercise for the experienced. But anyone can do it!

Here are a few things to keep in mind about your first class:

It’s not as scary as it seems

Boxing class isn’t about learning how to fight and it’s not your first step to the ring. It’s an exercise. You don’t go to Zumba to prepare for your Broadway audition, do you? If you do, that’s awesome and we want to hear that story. But generally, you’re taking a fitness class for just that—exercise. The same goes for boxing!

You should arrive early

At least fifteen minutes early. You can speak with the instructor, and take your time setting up. You can learn how to wrap your hands and how to choose gloves (if you didn’t bring your own). Giving yourself enough time to prepare will make the rest of the class less nerve-wracking.

It’s like a dance workout

Like steps in choreography, the boxing coach will shout out moves and count with you. They will be there to guide you through every motion.

Wear the right clothes

You will be moving and you will be sweating. You’ll also be wearing gloves, so continuously pulling up your shorts, adjusting your t-shirt, or hair will be nearly impossible. Be sure to come prepared.

It’s all about form

Like dance, there is a right way and a wrong way to do things. You can injure yourself by doing the moves incorrectly, so be sure to listen to the instructor throughout the class.

It’s a full-body workout

Not only is it amazing cardio training, but you’ll be sore in places you never even knew existed. Your arms, your core, legs, hips, and feet! Yes, I said feet!

It’s a great stress reliever

This is a healthy way to release a lot of your pent-up energy and stress from your work week. You’ll find yourself leaving the gym with a sense of calm you didn’t have before.

It’s empowering

There’s something about putting on gloves and punching really hard that makes you feel empowered, strong, and ready to take on the world!
