September is Childhood Obesity Awareness Month, and it’s the perfect time for the whole family to learn healthy habits together! The family that exercises together, stays together. Plus, it will bring your family closer together. We’ve come up with a few tips to help your family stay active.
Take a class together
This can introduce new types of exercise and activities to the family! Depending on the ages of your kids, you can find parent/child classes to take together. Some locations offer Kids Zumba or Kids Yoga!
Plan weekly field trips
The Capital Region is steeped in rich history. Plan a Saturday hike at the Christman Preserve, visit a local museum, or find new books at the library. Choose something that will get your family up and away from the screens.
Rearrange your family room
As a group, clear out the family room and move stuff around. It’s a great way to get moving and your kids will love feeling involved in reorganizing a shared space. Listen to their suggestions and plan the room as a family. Bonus points if you put on music and dance while you clean!
Make chores a game
Playing music can add a little flair to chores making them a little more fun. Or, you could time how long it takes you to finish your chores. Then next time, you can try to beat your high score!
Grocery shop as a family
This can make healthy eating fun! Involve your kids in picking out healthy snacks an encourage them to choose a new fruit or vegetable to try each week.
Find a volunteer opportunity to do as a group. Whether it’s helping to build a local playground, picking up trash on the streets, or handing out water at a 5K, pick something fun for the family to do together!
