SMIST Programs

Duanesburg YMCA

Schoharie Mohawk Initiative for Science and Technology in cooperation with the Duanesburg YMCA are sponsoring the 2019 SeaPerch program ( for students in the local community. Students will build an underwater Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) from low-cost and easily accessible parts. Building a SeaPerch ROV teaches basic skills in ship and submarine design and encourages children to explore naval architecture and marine and ocean engineering principles. Throughout the program, students will learn basic science and engineering concepts, tool safety, problem solving, and teamwork.
This year?s SeaPerch challenge is inspired by real-life events. In 2018, the world watched closely as a group of students was trapped in a cave in Thailand due to rising water. The subterranean environment presented significant challenges for rescuers and required a team approach to safely navigate the caves, address evolving environmental challenges, and ultimately rescue the students.
