Debbie was kind enough to share her #ThisIsMyY story with our staff and volunteers at the 2018 Annual Campaign Kick-Off, but we want to share her story with all of you as well. She has encountered a number of hurdles, but the Y was always there to lend her a helping hand. This is Debbie’s story:
“I grew up wondering “when” not “if”. I never thought about HOW to get through it.
February 2010, I heard the words ‘You have breast cancer’. The day had arrived.
After multiple surgeries and chemotherapy, I realized I had new and different needs and wasn’t sure where to turn. I tried support groups but didn’t feel like any were a good fit. Then, someone told me about LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA. In October 2013, I met an amazing group of coaches and fellow survivors. We exercised together, laughed together, cried together. We went out to dinner and ice cream at Jumpin Jack’s. We became each other’s support system. We became friends. I still keep in touch with a number of them.
LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA changed the direction of my life. I’m in better shape than I’ve been since high school. And emotionally, I know my LIVESTRONG group will always be there for me, as I am for them.
I’ve now been given a tremendous new privilege and opportunity…I became a LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA coach and I love that I can give back to cancer survivors, as my coaches gave to me.
Without funding, this program would not exist, would not survive. LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA can change lives; it changed mine.”
