Did you know that Father’s Day began at the YMCA?
Father’s Day was founded in 1910 by Sonora Smart Dodd at the YMCA in Spokane, WA. Sonora’s father, Jackson Smart, was a single father of six. Upon hearing a sermon about Mother’s Day, Sonora felt that fathers deserve to have a special day too. Initially, she wanted the day to be celebrated on June 5, her father’s birthday. However, the pastor did not have enough time to prepare a sermon, moving Father’s day to the third Sunday in June.
Let’s take a moment to thank our fathers for all they do. Join us at the Y to spend some quality time enjoying a game of pick-up basketball, swimming in the pool, lifting weights or relaxing in the whirlpool.
However you choose to spend this day, remember Sonora Dodd and her appreciation for dads everywhere.
Happy Father’s Day!
