845 Commons Residence Program

845 Commons, located on Broadway in Schenectady opened in 2015. Previously an abandoned factory, it is now the largest single-site supportive housing residence west of the Hudson. It houses 155 studio apartments for men including veterans, disabled individuals, and those coping with a mental illness.

845 Commons provides several services to its tenants, including case management, referrals for medical and behavioral health treatment, employment training and placement, and life skills development. The Capital District YMCA collaborated on this project with several organizations including the New York State Homes and Community Renewal (NYSHCR), the New York State Office for Temporary Disability Assistance (NYSOTDA), the State Historic Preservation Office, the City of Schenectady, the Schenectady County Metroplex Development Authority, and many others.

This 8-year $26.5 million project was revered by Governor Andrew Cuomo, Mayor of Schenectady Gary McCarthy, NYS Assemblyman Jim Tedisco, and NYS Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara. In April 2016, it was the recipient of a Historic Preservation Award by The Preservation League of New York State. This project aided the city of Schenectady in being recognized by President Obama as one of only three cities in the United States to effectively eliminate veteran homelessness.

The Capital District YMCA graciously thanks all partners involved in this highly successful project.

Mont Pleasant Commons

For many years, 1502 Chrisler Avenue, Schenectady, NY was a YMCA branch where support and programs focused on youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.

To meet the growing demand and needs of our aging population with the financial support of U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), the CDYMCA built Mont Pleasant Commons. The property is now home to 49 non-smoking 538 square foot units of affordable senior apartments. Per HUD rules, an applicant must be at least 62 years of age with annual income limits established every year.

The building is secured by an electronic entrance system and cameras throughout the common areas and exterior of the building. All areas are monitored for smoke/fire and connected directly to emergency response providers.

We currently host: bi-weekly SilverSneakers® programs, a monthly Monday Matinee Movie, Bingo, and coffee hour every Friday afternoon. In the spring and summer, residents enjoy our back patio or gazebo. We provide garden plots for residence's favor vegetable and/or flowers.

The Tenant Selection Plan provides all program requirements. If you have any questions or wish to schedule a tour please call our office at 518-382-1848
